The Bronx Bombers got their asses handed to them today in the first game in "the new Yankee Stadium". CC was pretty solid for almost 6 innings he pitched, but when you throw 122 pitches in 6 innings there is an economic pitch count problem. Usually this means you go to the bullpen, and in the Yankees case you now need 2+ innings of relief until you get to Mariano, which means cue "Enter Sandman" game over. Get 6 or 7 outs and the game would be over. Obviously that was too much to ask for, because they loaded the bases and gave up a grand slam, a solo home run, and the list goes on.
I have no scientific proof of what I'm about to say, but I watch every game so it has to count for something. I feel like the Yankees never have all "three components" complimenting each other to be a World Series team. I think the components are 1. Starting Pitching, 2. Offense, 3. Relief Pitching. And this really should be the Yankees formula for success, I mean if you want to add defense as 3.b. go for it, but how many errors do you see that actually cost teams the game, not many.
It seems like every game they play they are either absolutely terrible or almost perfect. The games they win, starting pitching goes 8 innings gives up 1 run, the offense scores 10 runs, and the bullpen finishes it off easily. The games they lose, starting pitching gets shelled for 10 runs, the offense leaves 20 runners on base and scores 2 runs, and the bullpen gives up another 10 runs to put the icing on the cake.
I'm concerned about the Yanks and I will not feel comfortable until we hold a 20 game lead in the AL East, and then its not long before I'm back to being nervous for the playoffs. I think we will be alright, and win the division though. The O's always start hot and finish 30 games under .500, the Blue Jays are from Canada, the Red Sox lack offense, and the Rays were a fluke. Thats right, stay tuned for the follow up article about why the Rays will be back to their old losing ways.
